These socks took me forever to knit. I was over them way before they were done, and I think they were what caused me to lose my sock knitting mojo! Today in the sunshine, they look happy and I'll forgive them.

I'll let go of the fact that I knit almost a whole sock in the 84 stitch pattern thinking surely that will be big enough only to find out I was WRONG. So up to 92 stitches around, which just seems wrong on so many levels. 92 stitches? Seriously?! But I'll let that go, and be proud of how well the yarn works with this pattern and realize it was worth it!

Spring Break Project #3

Another before and after type post! (I do have knitting to show you too, but that may be another day) Knox's litter box fits perfectly in the unused fireplace in our bedroom, but it has been a bit of an eye sore, especially because it what you see when you walk up the stairs. I thought a fireplace screen would help! (Mom and Dad found this at an estate sale for $7.50! Talk about a bargain!

But you can see through it!

Spring Break Project #2

This spring break has been full of getting some much needed projects done. Here is another piece that needed a little revamping for the new house. Two cans of spray paint later and I'm happy!

Plus it feels great to get some things crossed off my list. Still have some work to finish, though I've done some of it and finally removed all the boxes of "my childhood" from my parents. Right now they are in the basement. Out of sight out of mind. I should go through them, but that may have to wait for summer break.

Spring Break Project #1

I have to say I love "Spring Break" especially when I'm not desperately trying to finish a dissertation :) So far I've gotten to spend fun time with my families!!! and now am starting some of my to-do list (while I procrastinate a little on my work to-do list) So here is the first project:

The before picture!

I love this little arrangement. I got it in Baton Rouge and it was perfect to add a little soft touch to a rather drab apartment. I looked good in my new house until I found the perfect rug for the entry way. Then it clashed! and every time I walked by my eye screamed something was off. I thought I would have to replace it, and then I realized it had a foam center, so I decided to swap some flowers and ribbons instead.

My dear mom helped me pick flowers out and then I went to work! (Now my mom is amazing with flowers, and has always made stuff for me....including all my wedding pics) I've watched and helped her, but never tried on my own. So this time I tried on my own, knowing I could run to her for help if I made a disaster. I'm quite pleased with myself and feel like the colors work so much better now!

Trying something new this year!

You know I often don't post because I don't have pictures, but today I decided not to care! (maybe I'll do that more often) Last year I was on a yarn diet. Like all diets it went okay at best. Don't take me wrong I did knit a lot of yarn that I had (in preparation for moving), but I still feel like I'm bursting at the seams. Granted my stash is small compared to many I've seen, but....I feel the need for less. Perhaps to make shopping more fun and less guilt ridden. Here's the plan:

12 projects (socks, gloves, baby items, a sweater)
with 12 stash yarns
12 months

First of all, I find it scary that I have that much yarn, but this will help to reduce things. The goal is one a month (since that seems logical). I don't think it will be all my knitting either, but it will be a considerable amount.

And just so you know.....1 project is done (some plain socks) I'll show you a picture in a future post! So are you trying to knit down your stash too?

My gauge swatch LIED!

So I've started Tempest, a fun cardigan with some Christmas yarn (thanks Mom and Amber!) My last sweater came out too big (more on that another day) so I dutifully worked a gauge swatch (a full 4in by 4in mind you). Of course I didn't get gauge....so I went up 2 needle sizes and made ANOTHER gauge swatch. I was still a little under so I went up a size. I measured and remeasured! I talked it over with another trusted knitter. I was set!

Everything seemed fine, but then it started to seem a little long....I kept trying to convince myself it was okay. So after I finished the back I blocked it and measured.....way WAY too BIG!!! It will be pretty when it is the right size and thankfully I found out after doing the back!

So with all that planning why oh why did this happen? I measured the finished garment and my gauge didn't match the swatch! I don't know if I changed? or if the weight of the bigger garment changed it somehow?

I'm going back to the smaller needles (same size) and going to see what happens. Since planning didn't do me any good we're going to wing it.

Test Knit!

I'm so excited to be able to share this pattern with you that I just test knit for Robin! Plus it is free on ravelry here!

What an enjoyable knit! A perfect shawl for someone wanting to try out lace! Most rows are plain knitting with an occasional patterned row. I think this pattern would work well with almost any yarn (solid, multi-colored, even handspun!)

The details in this pattern are wonderful. Follow the directions closely and the edges will look wonderful. I especially like the details in the edging that prevent the shawl from rolling.

I used the option B decreases (I tried to take a close up to show what that looked like!) There was a noticeable difference in the color of the two skeins of yarn I was using, so I did the modification listed in the pattern to account for this. I can tell where I switched skeins, but it works in the pattern and just looks like a design element.

This was an interesting construction as well because it was knit from the edge to the center of the top. This makes the pattern go really fast at the end! As for the cast on….I ran out of yarn for a long tail cast on and finished the last 20 stitches or so with a knitted cast on and can’t tell a difference)

New beginnings!

I think I'm finally ready to re-enter my blog world again. As you know, I haven't been really blogging for a year. (I had a degree to finish and a job to find and wanted no excuses and fewer distractions) I have missed my dear friends that I met here! Now I've struggled with coming back.

I've changed in the last year. I find it hard to describe, but I have grown and changed so much in the last year that I've struggled with what to do here. I want to keep it "my place" and want to feel comfortable being me (whoever that is). So here I am!

I successfully defended my dissertation and graduated (all praise to God!) I'm very thankful to have a tenure-track job (and DH has part-time teaching too), even close to home and back in Kansas! God made the decisions very clear and we are thankful for His faithfulness. Our prayer now if for a tenure-track job for DH as well.

Knox if finally adjusting (after a month!) Just in the last week she has found her toys and enjoyed playing in a bigger home!

I have missed my knitting friends greatly, but have found where the local knitters meet and am going for the first time tonight! I must admit....I'm nervous....wondering if they will like me....like my knitting.....I know it will all be fine and I'm just being silly! So here goes....I have my project and am ready to go!

Did you think I had forgotten about you? Of course not. Unfortunately there are priorities in my life right now that keep putting the blog on hold....you know finding a job! Thank you for your prayers on the job search front, please keep praying for clear direction!

Here are the numbers:

1. 140 jobs applied for!

2. waiting, waiting, waiting

3. 14 interviews done (phone or 30 minute type ones at a conference)

4. more waiting

Now I'm just waiting to see if I get invited to an on campus interview, plus according to everyone it is still really early in the process. Again I really appreciate all your prayers! This has been a time when I've learned to trust God in a bigger way. I trust Him for peace in a decision, I trust Him to work to find jobs for both me and DH!

This blanket was actually done well before the other! I've discovered that I really do prefer crocheting baby blankets. I think in the future I will stick to that, unless it is for that cute giraffe blanket I just posted about yesterday! :)

When I picked the pattern and yarn I didn't know if it would be a boy or girl (though looking at the finished product, I'm glad it is going to a little girl....it would have been okay for a boy....others on ravelry have changed the border a little bit if it is for a boy and that works well too IMHO)

I'm almost ready to send some packages off for these bundles of joy....almost! :)

I got this really sweet email from Linda of Little Piggy Patterns alerting me to a giraffe blanket she has for sale! and you all know how I love a good giraffe pattern, so I had to share with you all (and everyone who finds my blog looking for giraffe patterns....and there are quite a few)

An old FO, but a new scarf

Boy last week felt intense? why? not really sure, but now I feel better. Had my virtual meeting with my advisor this morning (it went well---thanks for asking) and now my stress level feels better. (Not to say that I don't have a lot to do for next weeks meeting, but this afternoon I'm enjoying the relief!) Now on to knitting/crocheting:

This scarf I finished right before I left for Scotland (yep...way back in July) and it didn't get blocked until a few weeks ago....I'm afraid it doesn't realize how much I love it.....

Pattern: Scaruffle (from Knitter's Book of Yarn)

Yarn: discontinued Alpaga yarn (100 % alpaca in a sport weight) from my grandma :) not sure how much because I used some partial balls, maybe 100g?

Needles: US 4 and 10

Mods: None.

I really liked the construction of this....the increases are really only on one row and those well placed increases and larger needles creates the ruffle effect. (okay a few short row too, but nothing major) It isn't a large scarf, but a nice little ruffle to peak out of a coat....so light and fun....now I have to decide if I need a matching hat of some sort? I have the yarn....hmmm.

Baby Blanket update: The crocheted one is done....just need to weave in end and block! The knitted (cabled one) coming along!

More blankets

Thanks for all your encouragement to keep going on blanket #1. In the process I started blanket #2 (I needed something that felt faster) It will be done in no time!

This picture is a day or two old and now I have less than 3 rows on the border left! So hopefully this weekend it will be done. This has been a fun project (and it has nice little scallops on the border that I find really sweet, can't wait to finish and show you those) and it is nice having some natural "guide posts." When you get the center done....I feel like I've made tons of progress, then just the border. Then I know I only have 12 more rounds to go vs my current knitting pattern.....go until 36 inches then you are done. Maybe that is why I like knitting socks? Do the leg...yeah....heel....yeah...gusset....yeah...foot....yeah....toes (or reverse) but those little achievements motivate me. I always think I can do the next little step.

Woohoo! Pictures loaded! So today is just a WIP progress report!

Baby Blanket: Coming along nicely, but a little slow going....16 inches as of this morning. I've been mainly knitting on it in the morning which explains the slowness, but I get tired of it too so I have done other knitting at night.

and the first sock is done! I'm so happy with it! It sits of my "legs" awaiting its mate for a final picture (and for me to admire as I walk by)

I do have some other projects to talk about, but they will have to wait for tomorrow. Lots of math to do (which is going well) but I need to sort some of it out....ie get off the computer :) Have a super day!

Yarn diet!

Remember how I said I was going on a yarn diet after my trip to Scotland? (except for baby yarn....because there is none in the stash and there are babies to knit for) So I needed to share how well I'm doing. I almost cheated.....did you catch the almost? Saturday night, after a blissful day of spinning, I saw Wollemeise available at The Loopy Ewe. People go crazy for this yarn (sock yarn) absolutely crazy and I saw 13 colorways available.....they always sell out within a few hours.....if they last that long. I almost gave in.....but I have no guilt and am happy to report I have no Wollemeise. I don't know if it would live up to the hype, but the diet is going strong at the moment! Just thought you should know. :)

....I'm knitting socks too! Can I ever not have a pair of socks on the needles? This is another pattern from Wendy Johnson's "Socks From the Toe Up." Love this book, if I haven't mentioned that before.

So far so good. Not the fastest pattern out there with cables and twisted stitches and all, but I'm loving these socks! and they have a heel flap! Yep! there it is!

A very different construction compared with top down heel flaps, but ends up the same! I just trusted Wendy and followed the directions to a t and they worked. I'm going to pay attention on the next sock to see how to modify it to be a deeper flap...me and my big feet prefer that...but I think that shouldn't be too hard! Enjoy the weekend! I'm off for some spinning fun Saturday and relaxing!

More baby knitting!

I'm not quite sure why school has seemed so stressful this week. It isn't like I'm taking tons of classes or teaching, but my routine has changed. I do best with a routine, I need it, it makes me happy. I'm still sorting out my routine right now. I guess it doesn't help that parking is crazy (no one is skipping classes yet....it will settle down in a couple of weeks)!

Here is some cuteness from the weekend. Knox climbed into DH's old backpack....now a gym bag....it smells....she didn't mind. She slept most of the afternoon there....occasionally getting up, stretching, and repositioning!

Here is my progress on the first baby blanket! I'm loving it, although it is slow going! I set up a rav page if you want more details. Oh and in case you are interested....I made a web page for myself last week (a necessity when going on the academic job market) you can view it here if you like!

I didn't mean to disappear from blogland again, but I am trying to get my priorities straight. You know, like why should I blog if I am not taking care of my family (cooking, cleaning) or so exhausted I don't want to go to Bible study let alone daily quiet time, or just out of check with the world I live in.

But I think I've gotten some balance! Things are good at home and my new office at school! Math is progressing, so now the blogging. Don't worry I have been knitting...it is a must for relaxation! I think I mentioned that I have some serious baby knitting to do (two maybe three different babies to knit for....not my own....just don't want rumors starting)

Pattern: Ribbed Baby Jacket by Debbie Bliss

Yarn: Cottonease (1 skein!)

Needles: US 8

Mods: Well the ribbing is supposed to be a little longer (3 cm more) but I ran out of yarn and thought it looked fine shorter so I just called it done. I made a simple crochet loop for the button instead of a snap!

I don't know if this is going to a girl or boy....but I thought it was a fun gender neutral color. Not the standard green/yellow but not blue enough to have to be on a boy :)

and then the perfect button! This is going to a friend....she knows me so well and knows my love of giraffes so I thought it would make her smile!

K1 Yarn Trunk show

While in Glasgow I had the great treat of visiting a trunk show at the local yarn store K1 Yarns! The knitting goddess came to showcase her gorgeous hand dying!! She was a sweetie too! Needless to say....all my birthday money is gone....and I'm on a yarn diet! (Except for some baby knitting which there is no yarn in the stash to accommodate.....not for me, but some dear friends)

No SSS Here!

In math world "SSS" is a test to see if two triangles are congruent (could the be stacked on each other and match up exactly). The SSS test says if the sides of two triangles measure the same then the triangles are congruent---Side-Side-Side.

In knitting world "SSS" means Single Sock Syndrome. A condition where knitters only knit one sock and fail to complete the other sock in a timely fashion if at all!

When I first started making socks I perceived this could be an area of weakness for me....and I knew the ever DH wouldn't be happy if he found out about it. And for the most part I have been disciplined and not let it happen.

But then there was the one sock I completed on my last trip to Scotland....that has sat lonely! and there was another socks that I had just finished and wasn't too eager to start the second one. So then I had to decide what knitting to take on my 3 week trip. Socks sound perfect...I could start a brand new pair!!!! Instead I took the singletons and made their matches. It wasn't excited, but it does feel good to have them done and now I can start a new pair guilt free.

Pattern: Leyburn by Mintyfresh (Socks #5)

Yarn: Lorna's Laces

Needles: US 1's dpn

Time: Mid February-Mid August :)

Mods: Yep....used more stitches (I think I had 69 around the foot) Then I increased as directed for the leg....I could tell I had too many stitches so I cheated and decreased a few stitches mid leg....which looks weird when you aren't wearing the socks, but who looks at them then.

I think part of the reason I had trouble finishing these is that they have short row heels and toes. They fit fine, but I don't enjoy making them that way. Now that I have Wendy Johnson's new book I know other ways and doubt I will do this construction again!

So on to the other pair (Socks #10) They are actually a test knit...and I really like them! I feel safe to post about them because she wanted us to make rav project pages! This was the first time I had done a test knit and it went well. I'm not totally sure I'm willing to do it often....so many things I want to make, but occasionally I like to help out!

Pattern: Cloverleaf Cables (I'll link in rav when the pattern becomes available)

Yarn: Opal that I got on my first Scotland trip

Needles: US 1.5 magic loop

Size: Medium

Mods: None. I'm not sure why I didn't want to start the second one either....not the fastest knit with the cables and all but I enjoyed it!

On a personal note...Jetlag and I are at war. I'm so thankful that when I fly east I'm okay....I have work and limited time....but flying west....oh my. For the day when I want to sleep at night time, wake at day time, not have a roaring headache!! You would think after several days I would be fine....maybe it is because I thrive on routine and have always had very regular sleep patterns....who knows, but I'm okay from 6 am-9 am. After that....it is a gamble. I'm going to try to work today (I tried Friday and fell asleep in the middle of it) and see how it goes.

Bicycle Ride

***warning: a little bit of a mathy post, with no fiber content...sorry...soon normal content will return***

So as I'm on the home stretch of visit #2 to Scotland (where my phd advisor now lives) I get to enjoy a "bike ride!" Let me explain....

In mathematics (and most academic disciplines) there is a genealogy of sorts. Your advisor is your parent so to speak. Their advisor your grandparent. Other students they advise your siblings. So I am blessed to have an awesome advisor who happens to be a woman! Not something I sought out, but cool none the less. But it goes further I also have a mathematical grandma! In a field very dominated by men in the past, I think this is rather cool!

Saturday night my math mom told me the following about my mathematical grandma: She says when she proves something, she always stops and goes on a bike ride to enjoy the moment. She knows tomorrow there will be gaps to patch and new problems to solve, but she takes the time to savor the feeling of solving something with a bike ride.

So at the end of this trip, I get a math bike ride! Woohoo! God has answered my prayers!

9 years!

Dear Blog readers!

I know I've been remiss in updating you of my Scotland adventures....much of which include math, which few, if any, of you would be interested in. I have knitting to share with you too, but that will have to wait for another day as well.

Today I am overwhelmed with joy and emotion. Some of you I met last year when I told you "my story" (you can start reading it here) and it is one that still amazes me today. 9 years ago I was healed. 9 years ago, God heard my prayers and said my days were not over. 9 years ago I had brain surgery and God spared my life. I am thankful for each day. Thankful that I have another day to serve Him, another day to know Him more, another day to sing praises to Him! Thank you Lord for saving me!

July 26th is a day of great celebration in my life! I remember the first year (in Seattle at an REU....math camp sort of thing), the second as a newlywed, another in Nebraska with friends at another math camp thing and this year in Scotland, going to a church that I wish I had subtitles for the sermon :) but never the less felt it was a time of praise and rejoicing.

This year has been tough for me spiritually. I am not entirely sure why. 9 years ago, God became so real to me, my faith was tested and I clung to God with all I had. I knew that was my only chance. The last year God has been quiet to me and I have been discouraged in ways I couldn't have fathomed. I have realized that I wasn't clinging to Him like I had in that past and I earnestly desired to seek His face and be close to Him again and yet he felt so distant. I know He is faithful and in the last month I have been so encouraged. God has not abandoned me! I want to know Him. I don't want to be complacent in my faith or simply relive what God did years ago. (though it is a testimony I am so grateful to have) I want that closeness with Him always. I am so thankful God has made that possible!

Thank you for letting me share....I'm not convinced that my words have done justice to what is in my heart, but I trust you will see the truth. Leave me a comment about what God has or is doing in your life! We have much to rejoice about!

Family Fun!

We had the great pleasure of a visit from my younger brother this past weekend! (good thing he graduated so we could give him his present of a trip to BR!)

We went to the beach! (Pass Christian)

The boys built sand castles...I sat under the umbrella reading and sleeping! So peaceful except when brother started throwing things at me :)

Then to New Orleans to show him the sights!

The boys also went on a swamp tour and saw this! Overall a super trip! Full of good memories!

Last minute present done!

I thought I had plenty of time to make this blanket....for a great grandbaby of a friend at church...until I got the shower invitation! Unfortunately I will miss the shower (leaving for Scotland again this week) and wanted the present done before I left.

Pattern: Tiramisu (free)

Hook: H

Yarn: Bernat Baby Softee (1.4 skeins white) and a little pink

Mods: none

I decided to crochet this because it goes faster....and with one week to make it that was important. I also thought it could be a stash buster, because I had the white in my stash. I ran out and went to get another skein....they were out of white, hence the pink border! (I did reduce the stash some with this, but not as much as I hoped) I think it works though and is ready in plenty of time!

I'm so excited to show you my first pair of socks made from my own handspun! They were so fun to make from start to finish!

So Knox had to help with the photo shoot :)

I tried toe up socks again (after getting Wendy's book) and am so glad I did! These are super....with a gusset and all....plus they are nice and high because I saw I had plenty of yarn!

Pattern: Labyrinth Socks from "Socks from the toe up" by Wendy Johnson!

Needles: US 2 and 2.5 (for the leg) dpn

Yarn: Handspun Targhee 360 yards, sport weight

Mods: I used Judy's magic cast on for the toes and a sewn bind-off. Did 6 repeats of the chart...oh and for the last pattern row I left out one little part of the pattern because it really is setting things up for the next row and I thought would look like a floating yarn over.

and for the spinners....I had seen where you could buy these spinner control cards to help you spin the size you want...it seemed like such a quick visual check, especially since I haven't gotten fingering weight yarn yet. (They retail for $15) Then on ravelry I saw where someone had made one we could print off for free! I got it laminated, so for less the $2 I'm good to go! Do you want one too? Go here! (It is a ravelry link, I couldn't find any other!)

This post has been waiting for the mail to reach my SIL! She bought me Boutique Knits for my b-day and fell in love with this hat too! So as a special thank you (for several favors she has done) I made her one!

She said she was going to send pics....but I haven't gotten them yet....will update when I do because I have a feeling this hat will look much better on her! (which she loves by the way and it goes with all her coats as I hoped it would!)

More socks on the needles

Earlier this spring I embarked on my first toe up socks (the Anastasia Socks) they were okay....but I honestly don't enjoy the process of short row toes and heels....they fit my foot okay, but I don't look forward to making them.

But I haven't given up on toe up! (haha) maybe because the idea of not running out of yarn is so very appealing. So I ordered Wendy's new book...Socks from the toe up....and it is amazing!

She talks about so many different ways to do toes and heels....these are toes with Judy's magic cast on and a gusset heel...yep a gusset! It was easy and enjoyable! I'm totally rethinking toe up!

I'm loving watching my handspun become socks! (this is the Targhee!) and it has such a long leg because I still had yarn :) oh and as someone mentioned on the last post....yep these are on dpn! Even though I wrote magic loop tutorials (and still get lots of blog hits for them) dpn are my comfort knitting. Some projects seem better for magic loop and then I will go for it, but in general I reach for my lovely harmony dpn!

We had an awesome day at the beach this weekend....I didn't take pics.....instead read, napped, swam, watched DH build sand castles. It was such a nice reprieve! Of course it did slow my knitting down a little bit, but it was totally worth it!

I love how things transform with blocking....socks don't always get a blocking, but these softened up so much and smoothed out! I'm quite pleased!

Pattern: Flame Wave socks from Favorite socks (one of my favorite books)

Yarn: Cherry Tree Hill Supersock DK (now you know why these went so fast!) in potluck purple

Size: I made the larger size with 56 stitches

Needles: US 3 and US 2.5 dpn

Mods: I did a round toe...they just fit my foot better and added two rows of single crochet around the top which solved the rolling issue (plus a little blocking) Some mentioned picking up stitches and knitting ribbing....I did consider this, but thought crocheting would be easier and would keep the scalloped edge in tact, plus if the crocheting didn't work it would be easy to take out and pick up the stitches! Overall I'm pleased! Now it just needs to cool off enough to wear them!

These are in progress and are a nice quick knit in DK weight yarn :) (Another pattern from Favorite Socks) Can't say how much I like that book)

This pattern has some issues though...

See how it rolls at the top! It is even worse on a foot! If doing these again I would do a couple of rows of garter stitch....since I was in serious denial about the amount of roll going on, I'm going to do a couple of crochet rows and see if that fixes it!

I couldn't resist sharing this picture with you! The other day when I was studying I hear Knox rummaging in my backpack. I finally get up to make sure she isn't taring it up and find that she has wedged herself inside. Guess she really wants an education too!

A dear friend of mine is getting married next month....and I wanted to make her something for her new home. So I thought some little doilies would be perfect!

I made these four...and am going to wrap these with a ribbon and send them on their way! I decided to make them all different, I thought that might be more fun!

My personal fav! Maybe I need to whip up some of these for my own house....hmmmm, so much to make! :)

Socks #7 finished!

After one false start on these socks I'm done and happy with the results! Plus the feet can model a complete pair now (mom found them at an antique store for those of you who asked and I didn't have a way to answer you back!)

Pattern: Embossed leaves from Favorite socks

Yarn: Happy feet (won on Tienne's blog) This is the first time I've used this yarn and am happy so far. It knit well and the fabric it created feels nice. Now to see how they wear!

Needles: US 1.5

Mods: I added an extra pearl stitch between all the leaf patterns to bring the stitch count up to 68...which works perfect for me!

It has been a fun week here....DH and I celebrated anniversary #7, boy does time fly! .... Knox (the cat) got fleas for the first time....and tomorrow I get to babysit! (I'm quite excited about that actually....enjoying others cute babies for awhile is always fun!)

...spinning, knitting, doing math, but not blogging :( So there is lots to catch you up on! Today I will show you my spinning FO!

8 oz of Romney (I think I showed you one skein earlier)

Nice to work with, but quite a bit of VM (vegetable matter....little twigs to pick out) It drafted so nice and easily!

Then the surprise....I was going for sport weight and got lace weight....go figure! Still fun, just have to figure out what to do with it!

3.4 oz Merino/Silk blend

2-ply lace weight

I actually had trouble drafting this a little....I think it had to do with the dye job (purchase on etsy, both things I got weren't the most fun to work with although quite lovely in the end) Also we I "set the twist" (gave the yarn a bath) it turned my sink purple so much dye ran out.

Now my weekend fun! I dear knitting friend brought me back a treat from NM, where she got to meet my brother and SIL!

3-ply, sport weight

This was a dream to spin! It is so sproingy! (I know it isn't a word, but you get the idea) I was aiming for sock yarn (so lots of twist) and it is a little thick for fingering weight, but perfect sport weight yarn! The colors are so fun, I can't wait to cast on! Next time maybe I'll get fingering weight. (I get sport or lace...go figure!)

Last week I also had a cotton spinning lesson, so hopefully tomorrow I will share with you what I learned! Lastly I've been taking some of my own advise....while I've never been a great cleaner (keeping the house clean that is) I've been a slacker of late. I used to spend Friday afternoon or Saturday morning....couple hours...clean house (it is just DH and I and the cat after all) But I haven't wanted to do that. So now, taking advise I've given to others, but failed to do....I set the timer for 15 minutes....everyday....and clean until it goes off. 2 weeks later....clean house that stays maintained. I love it! (and two dresser drawers reorganized too!) Be warned: 15 minutes isn't long, you will want to keep going, but if I stop when the timer goes off then I'm still excited the next day to do it over again! and there really are few tasks that can't be done in 15 minutes. Granted I can't dust the whole house in 15 minutes, but I can do a room (or half a room at first....when there is lots of picking up to do too) Enjoy the day!

Handspun Hat!

I've been having a case of startitis....wanting to start projects instead of finishing ones I've already started. I guess to my defense, they are projects I've been wanting to make. So yes, I've cast on for the matching green sock, but that twisted ribbing bores me every time! (and I still have to do the second sock for the Leyburn socks...YIKES!...I think it is a good thing I don't have more sock knitting needles than I do, how would I ever finish?)

This hat out of Boutique Knits just jumped on and off the needles! And I adore it! The pattern is Argyle Lace Hat. This is the second hat made from this book (thanks B&A!) and I'm eyeing a couple of more things too!

There is a little lace diamondish part next to the buttons, but the dark yarn/dark hair combo made that really hard to photograph, maybe in natural light with someone else taking the pics?? I think it was another interesting construction....most of the hat is knit flat...with real button holes. This is a great hat to make for those who don't like working in the round. You do eventually work in the round, but only for the decrease section at the top!

The yarn: My own handspun merino. It was chain plyed and definitely not the most even yarn I've spun, but it knit up great! I followed the patterns suggestion of making your own buttons using fabric and love this option. I often have had a lot of trouble finding buttons I like and this is a nice alternative!

I have enough yarn left over to make a little neckwarmer (or fingerless mitts)....I think I've something picked out, oh but I should work on those socks, or the sweater on the needles, or the baby gifts needed for friends....we'll see. It all gets done eventually!

A word about fit: I've now made two hats from this book and they both fit me perfectly! Many on raverly complain about both hats I've made being too big....I do have a large head (no comments please) and also don't like anything tight on my head (a small side effect from brain surgery) I've made no modifications to the size on either hat and because I'm happy with the fit, I would agree many would think they are too big. Just wanted to mention that in case you want to go off and make yourself one too!

Well this is how much knitting I got done on my trip to KS....and I learned from my last pair of socks....so I tried it on!

too tight! Frogged! 4 stitches added (one in each purl spot) and much better!

Fiber Twins!

Saturday was a most delightful day as my fiber twin (aka....spinning teacher N) and I celebrated our birthdays (a day early) with a spinning, dyeing, knitting party! Such great friends came out to celebrate!

There were lots of lendrums for spinning....

....and knitters....

....and 3 dye pots. One each of orelopsis, annatto, and black walnut hulls!

Never having dyed anything, this was a fun adventure, but N knows a ton about natural dyeing so I learned a lot!

Did I mention there was cake too! What a perfect day....and I ended up transforming this....

....to this! (I'm thinking a 3-ply yarn with each color being one of the plies?)

Surgeon Dad!

Wow! It is hard to believe it has been 3 weeks since I've blogged. I guess that is what happens when you go visit family (for my bro's graduation...way to go!) squeeze in a math conference and finally drive home!

When I arrived at my parents.....this was on my bed!

I had mentioned to my mom that I really wanted some legs/feet to model socks! and super shopper that she is, found some and surprised me for my b-day! (These are socks I made for mom for Christmas that she dressed the feet with!....her Mother's day socks were finished with 2 hours to spare, she loves them, we forgot to take a picture)

I love the awesome pics I can get. (I'll let you in on a secret, they are actually guy feet, but seeing as my feet are almost guy size it will work perfect for modeling my socks!) Have you tried to take pics of socks on your own feet? Talk about all the blood rushing to your head! I love it! So the bad news was these weren't just feet, they were legs and quite big to store in my little apartment! Dad had an idea!

Cut them off, mount them to a board and there you go!

It was a fun morning project!

How did I forget to take a pic of the finished product? I'll show you soon, maybe modeling a sock!

Spinning Fun!

Okay, okay, I know I've been procrastinating finishing my mom's socks....in fact today I've set a goal on the sock before doing any other crafting (I'm about half way there) So what have I been doing instead?

Spinning.....

the lovely Romney I got in NM! :) One skein is done (~2.5 oz 196 yards, 3-ply) I'm excited to see what happens after it is washed! I have singles done up for 2 more skeins, plus fiber for just a little bit more!

Oh and half the singles done with a merino/silk blend! Yumm, but must get the other bobbins empty before I can finish.

Bad News: I've had some shoulder issues from spinning....it has taken me a long time to figure out the cause....Good News: so I forced myself to not spin for 4 days and it is feeling better! and when I spun last night I really watched my technique and limited my time...and the shoulder is fine today. So I just have to make sure that I watch my movements!

Bad News: I started a sweater (10 inches worth) with my Scotland yarn! Why is this bad?....because I'm not working on my sock! Good News: I'm loving the sweater, and the yarn, and I have a schedule for the sock. No problem!

200th post!

I'm having trouble believing I have written 200 posts....thanks for coming back to read them. I must admit that blogging has been more fun and rewarding than I ever dreamed. I have met such amazing people and have felt such encouragement! I guess it is fitting that this post (which I have nothing special planned) is about socks :)

One sock is done (and a good part of the leg of the second sock) I think the pink is brighter in person, but I can't get it to come out in the photo.

These should have no problem being done by Sunday (around dinner time)! to be given to my mom! I am so blessed that this year I get to see my mom on Mother's Day....we should be there by the evening....and I have all day to knit in the car.

Problem Solved!

It was nice this morning to wake up to a nice thunderstorm and the smell of homemade bread (from the bread machine) and know I could sleep a few more minutes! I love finals week. I have no finals, but even when I did, I was one of the strange ones who has always enjoyed the week. Maybe because I've mostly been a good student and so the last minute cramming wasn't as intense, or somehow that things were almost over and there were things to look forward to. Maybe it was the sense of accomplishment that I really had made it through another semester. Maybe it was just that I didn't have to sit through hours of lectures. DH and I (well even before we were married) always had fun during finals too! The dorms would be making weird concoctions of leftovers and we would go eat out or do some random things to get away from those who hated finals week. Well, my classes are done, maybe my last ones ever (there don't seem to be good classes for me to take next year), no exams, still just as much work to do as last Friday, but surprisingly I feel better. It is finals week after all!

And to celebrate I now have a matching hat and scarf!!! Woohoo! Remember I had solved this problem before going to Scotland only to lose my scarf which I had had for years, but of course not lose the new hat! Well now we have a hat and scarf! I really like my knitting to go together. Things don't have to match 100% and they don't need to look like they came from a store, but I want them to look nice....would hate for "What Not to Wear" to show up and try to take away my handknit items after all!

The pattern was easy, reversible, doesn't roll, and "matches" the hat pretty well. I'm not sure why it took me so much longer to make the scarf compared to the hat, they used the same amount of yarn?

Hardest Part

I find the hardest part of blogging to be remembering to take pictures! I get busy in the morning and then the light is bad in the evening....so instead of seeing progress....and trust me there has been progress....you will see the rest of my NM purchases.

My one impulse buy....Bo Peep's sock yarn...I think I would call it a sport weight, but it should be fun!

Cascade Yarns Heritage Sock Yarn....this looks fun and I've been dreaming of just the right pattern!

Well it was Easter, and I don't have a darning egg (not that I've needed one) but now I'm prepared and have some extra cedar protection to boot! Okay that is it! Now I think I'm on a yarn/fiber diet....not a strict one because those never work, but I need to use what I have! Does any one else have this problem?

Good News/Bad News!

Good News: Thursday DH and I went and picked blackberries on the levee with friends from the math dept! We had a wonderful time! Bad News: I ate too much blackberry pie this weekend! YUM!
Bad News: The first sock is almost done! It doesn't fit! I knew it...I really did, but I was having a Yarn Harlot moment! The two other times I made these socks they would have fit...guess I should have used bigger needles! Good News: My mom likes the socks and now I know what to get her for Mother's day!
Bad News: Remember how I lost my scarf in Scotland, yep the one I made the matching hat for? Good News: Replacements are well on the way. Hat done! Scarf started!

I absolutely fell in love with this hat when I saw it on ravelry and had to make one. My lovely SIL (and brother) bought me the book on our recent trip to NM for the rest of my B-day present (early). There are lots of patterns I want to make on it, but this one came first! It is knit completely flat and the "cable" is just two strips twisted and sew down over the seam. Very clever and easy for someone just comfortable with the basics.

ps. I was hard getting a good picture of the side of the hat by myself!

New Socks

The other night I needed a good project to work at knit night and cast on another pair of Waving Lace socks from Favorite Socks. (I know...I've made two other pairs of these, but none for me) It is an enjoyable pattern and I'm loving making them!

I picked up some new needles on my trip....by Kollage Yarns. They are SQUARE!! Supposedly they are supposed to be more ergonomically friendly. I can't speak to that yet, but so far so good....I'll keep you posted!

Wish I could stay and chat more, but somebody has to solve my math problems :)

So I mentioned to DH that he should guest blog about this stuff....but well he didn't seem too excited, so I will do my best and show some of the highlights!

Here is a pic from the Rio Grand Gorge Bridge. Breathtaking! I got car sick shortly after this, so I don't know what the other pics were of, but we had fun!

Here we (brother, me, SIL) are huddling before catching the train to Santa Fe. It turned out to be a little colder than we anticipated! (especially to DH and I)

DH and brother went to the top of the Sandia Mountains! Here is a pic overlooking Albuquerque!

I'm not sure what the significance of this theater is, but DH specifically wanted to go to see, so it much mean something.

Before we left, we ate here with SIL on her lunch break. What character and great food! and we decided the twins (brother and I) walk at a much different pace than our spouses, who where forever ahead of us :) we got a good chuckle!

Fiber Parade!

So there is just too much to share to make it in one post....so Spring Break trip to Albuquerque (Part 1). I really should have DH help with some of the landscape pics because he pays so much better attention to that stuff than I do!

So the real reason for the trip....to visit my twin brother and my SIL! (and the best part was seeing them!)

Do we look like twins?

So on Day 1....we drove to Taos....so DH could visit "the map store." He had fun and looked for a long time, which gave me the opportunity to peruse La lana Wools!!!! Almost all the yarn in the store was handspun and I came away with 8 ounces of lovely Romney roving! Yum! (Brother went with me while DH continued to shop at his store) :)

I am jealous of all the fiber arts stuff so close to my brother and SIL....but it does make for good presents :)

Speaking of presents....on Day 2 we rode the train to Santa Fe and my SIL and I got to spend some much needed time together! We had great fun and she bought my B-day present for me (a little early) part of it is 6 ounces of this lovely wool fiber! It came form The Looking Glass Yarn & Gifts. A lovely store that was so friendly! The color just spoke to me! What a nice pop of sunshine! (She has a pic of me knitting on the train....I will share it with you when I get it...hint, hint) I got some other goodies there too, but that is another post!

On Day 4 we finally spent some time in Albuquerque....bowling no less, quite fun too! and visited Village Wools! This store was overwhelming and wonderful all at the same time. I picked up some Border Leicester fiber there....I think this will be great for socks! Too many choices but so much fun!

So tomorrow I will show you the gorgeous landscapes we saw....and maybe the yarn I got too! I was a super trip...even though I was sick most of time, we all had fun....played Settlers (I love that game!), celebrated Easter, hung out, what could be better?

Whew! That felt close! But by 11:00 pm on Saturday it was finished and getting washed. We had a sweet shower on Sunday after church and the new mom seemed really happy! In fact, as she left (to go visit Henry) she took the blanket with her and said she was going to put it on Henry right then! I know making it reminded me to pray for him a lot and it is so encouraging to hear he is doing well. As soon as his feeding is normalized (ie-all from the bottle) he can go home!

Pattern: Simple basket weave pattern with seed stitch border (6 stitches and 10 rows for one block)

Needles: Size 4 (I think)

Yarn: Bernat Softee in white

Crunch time

Are you tired of seeing yarn?

Another day of spinning show and tell! (I know....I know....I just get started and can't stop. I've been staying up late just to see what it will look like plyed) And to give you a time frame, this was spun last Tuesday!

This is some mystery fiber that came with my wheel. I must say it spun up wonderfully though...and is my most consistent work to date.

I did a 3 ply...I like the smoothness I get with a 3 ply versus a 2 ply. The two skeins are about 5 ounces and 262 yards. (So I think in the end I will have 7-8 oz and 400 yards) I have just a little more to ply and will have a full third skein. I love watching how the colors of the fiber mix when you spin. I guess I should have taken a pic of the fiber before starting....I'll try to be better next time!

I must admit....the grey makes me think of you mom!

Yummy Merino!

Remember this?

8.9 ounces of yummy merino from my brother and sister in law for Christmas (My SIL has such good taste!) and I'm enjoying their company right now!!

It was a dream to spin! It is a 3 ply yarn. I was going for something a little thicker and I am pleased with the result!

So we have 8.9 oz, 383 yards in a 3 ply yarn! (the pic of the fiber is the most accurate colorwise) You know what I've discovered? I can spin yarn faster than I can use it! Talk about scary....Must knit faster! or spin slower I guess :) I still find spinning so magical. You start with fluff and get yarn, but it isn't finished there.....still full of potential and waiting to be made into something. Too much fun!

More fiber fun

This fiber and I didn't get along for a while! It is 100% alpaca and well at the first half of it was challenging. The fiber kept getting away from me! So it went in time out!

After going to my fast flyer....I tried again. Much better. In fact it just flew off the wheel!

Spring Break fun

The "to do" list is complete for the day....woohoo...except for a little packing later....yep another trip....this time to see my dear brother and sister in law!!! no math involved!!

I have some spinning to show you....I hoped you won't be bored over the next few days because there is a LOT of fiber to show off!

About a week ago I graduated to the fast flyer on my wheel...this means that twist goes into the fiber quicker....yesterday I was on the fastest setting I have and still waiting for the twist....crazy huh! Who would of thought that I would think about getting the very fast flyer?

This is what I call the never ending brown fiber! My first two skeins from Lindy were this fiber (it came with my wheel) and here are 3 more. Unfortunately the first two skeins are a little thicker, but I still think I can make it work. Let's see...these three skeins are 6.8 oz and 690 yards.

I have 5 oz and 400 yards from the earlier spinning....so I think if I alternate rows (or just do two different projects) I should be in good shape...maybe a vest? who knows? by the way, does handspun count as stash?

Baby Henry!

It is Spring Break!!! oh how lovely to spend the day sipping coffee, reading a Grace Livingston Hill novel from the library, watching Sherlock Holmes movies with DH, knitting and spinning with Lindy! and that doesn't even mention knit night tonight! Don't get me wrong, I like what I do, but a really break is wonderful too!

On the knitting needles is a baby blanket....

...for little Henry. I lady started coming to our church right about when I got back from Scotland. I really haven't had much of a chance to visit with her, and then we got news that she had her baby. He is a premie being born just over 3 lbs, but seems to be hanging in there and doing okay. The ladies of the church are throwing her a surprise shower the Sunday after Easter. I know this little guy needs prayer and when I knit I pray. So this baby blanket was quickly cast on!

My prayer for Henry....Lord may this little guy grow up to know you and know how precious he is to you. Lord strengthen his body and protect his developement. Lord show us how to reach out to this new mom to show her your love and share the gospel. Lord, we know no one is worthy to stand in your presence, we have been separating from you by our sin. Thank you for sending a savior, Jesus, to pay the debt of our sins making us able to stand before you blameless. Lord it is a love we don't deserve, but are so thankful for. May Henry grow to learn this, so he to can be a part of your family! Amen.

....to pull out Lindy and spin again! Boy have I missed it. Holiday knitting and way too much traveling have made spinning go on the back burner. Not to mention, you make all this yummy yarn that needs to be used!

Here is 4 oz of Merino. I ended up doing a chain plying (or Navajo plying). This is a way of creating a 3 ply yarn from one single. The advantage is that it is nice to not have to have 3 equal lengths on bobbins (which never happens) and I hear it can be good for certain color effects. I found that it was harder to deal with my single breaking, but with practice maybe that wouldn't be an issue.

Right now I'm thinking it wants to be a hat and maybe a cowl....will 350 yards be enough? I think so....so many decisions to make!

I still need to wash this yarn but maybe that will happen next weekend! Now I need to prepare a talk for tomorrow :) (because there is spinning with N tonight!!!!)

I think life is starting to feel normal again. Last week, once DH got sick, I realized that I too had been sick...not just jet lag :) But now we seem to be doing better!

On a side note, not a knitting note.....do you notice how many people miss use the word to, too, two? Now if you read this blog you know that I'm not the best at grammar, nor do I really try to be, but....last week, posted in the office, a memorial service invitation...."A life to short...." I couldn't believe it! I felt bad for his family. Oh well! Rant is over!

When I returned from Glasgow I needed a comfort knit....something easy that would make me forget how tired I was and just relax! Good thing the memory of frogging 2/3's of the second sock had lessened, so these socks came out of time out and flew off the needles!

Pattern: Basic sock on 68 stitches with 2x2 ribbing and heel flap.

Yarn: Austermann Step (I really liked working with it, I hope they feel as good on my feet and after a few washes)

Needles: US 1.5 DPN

Time to knit: Too long.....started these socks on my trip to Chicago in December. Start the second sock on my trip to DC in January only to find out that I can't count and had been using 64 stitches (I know....I am a mathematician, but I can't count....I am not alone....trust me!)

The stripes didn't match exactly, but I'm okay with that! Next time thought I would do a round toe.....they really do fit my feet better that way!

We had a relaxed weekend....I love those....including a cookout with friends!!!! If only everyday could be the weekend! But then maybe they wouldn't feel so special? Tomorrow...spinning update!!!

....well there was that visit to the police station....making my first police report ever....where my american english was quickly translated to scottish english....I wish I could remember all the phrases used, but....my head was in other places.

Bad News: All my money was stolen out of my hotel room!

Good News: I didn't have to deal with it alone....nice having an advisor and her husband around....I switched hotels (to a nicer one at that) and the hotel reimbursed me out of pocket for what I lost! PTL! and my passport was still there!

The whole event left me a little shaken and it was hard to focus after that, but there was much to be thankful for in the situation!

I got to spend one glorious morning at k1 yarns, Glasgow's lovely yarn shop! and bought some lovely souvenir yarn!

A sweater's worth of yarn spun at the New Lanark mill...not too far from Glasgow! It is a wool/silk blend, a nice aran tweed! Yum!

And a little more in a different color...Mom this just screamed you! How could I not buy it?

and of course some sock yarn!

They also gave me a nice bag to hold my projects! Now my advisor also found me a knitting group to attend while I was in Glasgow! Well other people connected to the math department attend, so the group kind of found her! It was a nice evening to relax, sip some tea, eat a savory scone, and knit with new friends!

This doesn't even consider the accent issues.....may brain couldn't handle eves dropping....sounded too much like foreign language, when I really had to communicate I could, at least most of the time.

Not to mention that pedestrians don't have the right of way on the roads and the cars drive on the opposite side of the road...I had no instincts about where to look, but thankfully managed just fine! Glad I was on foot though!

I went shopping....for some unmentionables that were MUCH cheaper there than here! These pics are right outside the mall!

Everyone has said that jet lag is easier going west than east....I'm not sure I agree! Maybe because it is easier for me to go to bed and wake up early versus staying up late. Maybe it is that spring is in full force here and it wasn't there. Anyway, I'm getting there! Maybe tonight I will be able to stay up until 9 pm!

So where to start? Math....the real reason for the trip.....productive! I worked very hard on this trip (maybe that is why I'm so tired now?) and it was awesome to be able to talk to my advisor daily! It is a true answer to prayer that the long distance thing is working and I'm progressing on my research!

My second weekend in Glasgow we went to Sterling Castle! It was awesome! Renovated in the 1500's! I love seeing where the royalty would preserve over the great hall....just like the movies!

I guess I'm going to let the pictures tell the story of the castle (there are more...I'll show you in another post...don't want this one too long)

I just love this one...looking out the window...too cool!

So let's see....I still need to tell you about....so many things!

Tomorrow I'm going home! It has been a good trip....with stories and adventures no less....yarn, police station and some math....but all in due time I will share my travels. Last week at knit night, there was shock and horror when I mentioned not having a hat for Scotland. In reality I did have a hat, I just didn't like it. I had made it to match a scarf I made and was never really happy with it (loved the scarf). I also am picky about hats, I don't like them too tight!

Now the good people that knitters are....I had many, many hats offered to me. Instead I decided to frog the old hat and try again! It still isn't a perfect hat, but is much better! and will keep me warm!

Well the packing is well underway....close to finished I think. I wanted to take a little something for my adviser's daughter (besides Cheerios) and this seemed to be perfect!

Pattern: Baby Shrug

Size: 18-24 month

Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, Berry and a little bit of Lime (thank you YarnGurl)

Needles: US 8

Mods: Well I added the little flower, after all this girl's first word was flower so it seemed only fitting. If I were to do it again I would do ssk instead of the weird decrease they had. It seems a little big, but hopefully it will fit!

Preparing

Last weekend also included a trip to the library to get some things. Have you been wondering why I've been so anxious to get wool socks made when I live in warm Louisiana? Why is the blog so quiet? why the big math push? Well the photo should be a good hint!

Next week I'm off to Glasgow! My advisor is currently there and the trip is to do research there with her...and have a little fun! So now I'm in the mode that says: what do I need to pack? how do I prepare to be gone for almost a month? international travel? My lists are made and I think I'm covered! So for the next month the blog may not be as active. I do want to keep blogging, but I'm not entirely sure how much time my schedule will allow for it, so I wanted you all to know! I'll update when I can and will be looking for some lovely yarn while I'm gone!

KAL Socks Finished!

Fair warning...this pattern is highly addictive! Every other row is plain knit and it is so easy to say "just one more eyelet row." I'm happy these socks are finished and can be warming my toes! By the way....thanks for all the math encouragement. I chatted with my advisor yesterday and she was grinning ear to ear! Those are fun meetings!

Pattern: Anastasia Socks (for Baton Rouge Red Sticks KAL)

Yarn: Lang Jawoll Cotton Collor

Needles: DPN US 1.5 and 2 (I switched to the 2's towards the top of the cuff to make sure they were stretchy enough. I probably didn't have to do this, but I wasn't sure)

Mods: I cast on 64 stitches instead of 60, so there were 12 stitches between eyelets.

New things learned: Toe up construction with short row heels and toes! While I didn't really enjoy doing the short rows I can't argue with the results. Normally I have to give a new technique a few pair before I can really judge if I like doing it or not!

PS....I love how the socks are mirror images of each other!

Fiber Love!

So I've been promising you a spinning post for awhile....and while spinning has been slow lately (as is indicated by the many finished objects you've been seeing) I did score some awesome fiber over Christmas that you must see!

First by SIL (and brother, but we know my SIL is really the one to score these lovelies for me!)

This is 8 oz of undyed Corredaile (sp?)! I'm enjoying dreaming about what this should be!

and 8 + oz of Merino in lovely pink! (Knox wanted in on the fun...I think she heard a bird outside too) Oh to live where fiber was so easily accessible....oh no then my fiber stash would be even worse!

And 8 oz of merino in blue that I bought at the Yarn Barn!

And last, but definitely not least was what Santa left in my stocking!!!! (boy I must have been good this year...thanks Mom!) 50/50 Bamboo/Merino blend by Creatively Dyed! I love looking at this and dreaming of the possibilities!

I am so eager to spin...but am feeling the need to make lots of warm socks right now....the spinning time will come!

On the math front: It was an awesome week last week. My work has been verified by my advisor and I was right...WOOHOO! so now I get to figure out what follows from what I figured out! (I could give you details, but I don't think you really want them) :)

Another Pair of Socks

In my lack of blogging I didn't even hint to you all I was working on these socks! One of my very favorite sock books is Favorite Socks. (I think I've made 8 patterns from it) While this pattern didn't jump off the page at me....maybe because I was lacking sport weight sock yarn....upon second thought I gave them a try and love the results!

These are made from the only yarn I bought over Christmas (but I did get some fiber that you all must see) I got it from the Yarn Barn with I had the pleasure of visiting with my mom and grandma. It was so fun...what an awesome store! My mom left wanting to explore her "inner weaver" as she loved all the hand woven finished objects!!

Okay, so here are the details:

Pattern: Lace Cuff Anklets from Favorite Socks

Yarn: Reynolds Soft Sea Wool

Needles: US 4, 3 and 2 DPN

Mods: None. I cast on for 56 stitches and with the thicker yarn they fit perfectly and went super fast!

This yarn is so soft and sproingy....I really enjoyed working with it! I'm not sure how well it will wear....after wearing them all day yesterday the bottoms definitely showed wear and the heels pilled a little. The yarn isn't superwash and has no nylon either. Maybe someone else knows how it wears better than I do. Even saying all of that....it was a true joy to knit with and the socks are very comfy!

More good math days....you must be praying hard for me.....off to work!

Friday during lunch several of us knitters decided to help each other out with a photo-shoot of some finished objects. It was a gorgeous day and we had a blast!

Ashley has a washcloth to photograph, but really came along to help us out! S had the hat she is wearing and a pair of socks! alh had a pair of socks, a sweater, and a hat. Me.....the clapotis!

I finished it maybe two weeks ago and love it! The perfect wrap for a cold classroom, but it needed a proper picture!

Knit-a-long Socks

Thank you all for your kind words yesterday! I'm still not 100%, but I'm hanging in there!

My Tuesday night knitting group decided to do a Knit-a-long (KAL) to learn toe up sock construction. Several in the group knew how to do this and many (me included) did not. So will picked a pattern, we all went to our respective homes, searched our stash for the perfect yarn, and cast on Tuesday night. There were the group learns....huddled together, talking, demonstrating, redemonstrating, consulting printed out directions with pictures.....then there was the group (using the term loosely) that each worked individually, consulting with each other at key moments, then returned to intently work alone....they weren't anti-social just focused...then there was the rebellious group....we don't want to make socks or at least not what everyone else is working on! What group would you be in? Me?

I was in the individual group....consulting as needed! No judgement on any of the groups....we all learn differently...I appreciate and respect that....it was just fun to see everyone at work learning/teaching new skills! My sock is happily progressing (I did 64 instead of 60 stitches) and so far it fits! I love that about toe up socks...you can try them on as you go! We'll see how the heal goes!

Secret Prayer Sock Swap

Do you remember the Secret Prayer Sock Swap? I signed up back in May and got the privilege to pray for a lady in Norway while making the Hedgerow socks. The idea of the swap is that you are suppose to pray for someone while making them socks. Knitting the socks is to be a reminder to pray. You don't know who is knitting for you either. Well for whatever reason I never received socks from my first partner. I was reassign to Katie who made me these gorgeous socks!

The pattern is Shur'tagal Sock with the lovely Fyberspates yarn!

Even more than the socks I'm so thankful for the prayers! Finishing a Phd is hard, especially with the complications that have occurred in my situation, but it is nothing the Lord can't handle. I am so encouraged having Katie join me in prayer and the socks are a super reminder!

The heel is fun too...it is a garter stitch heel! No one has ever made me socks before....normally it goes the other way....I sure do feel special!

Did I mention she sent chocolate too? All gone, very yummy!

Well I was making great progress on my second sock....almost finished the gusset...and then I thought to count stitches....what? why only 64 instead of 68? Seriously I had make 2/3 of a sock with the wrong number of stitches.

It is frogged and in time out!

I just can't face it right now. I do know how this would happen. I cast on one morning in DC in a hurry to have something for the knitting circle....while I do a lot of math....a lot....I not good at counting!

Wow is it hard catching up on all this blogging! So many wonderful things happened and I want you all to know about all of it.....so for some random fun things keep reading!

A highlight from my trip to Kansas was meeting a blogging friend Jennifer! We met in blogland only to discover that I grew up really close to her! While home for Christmas my mom and I met Jennifer at a Starbucks for knitting fun! It is wonderful when you meet new people and feel like old friends!

Kinda of weird to tell friends and family I'm going to meet an internet friend, but.... :)

This next part is for my dad....while he rarely comments he does read my blog (even with all the knitting content) The hotel where the math conference was in DC served his favorite coffee (it's at the top of my list too) Illy! Yumm! This pic is all for you dad! Dad did make it for me a lot when I was home too and boy did I get spoiled. Maybe I'll break down and buy some for myself too!

Finally, in the spirit of trying new things....I ate real sushi in DC! (as in raw fish, not just cooked things rolled up to look like sushi) One of my conference friends was a missionary in Japan for a few years before doing all this math stuff. She was raving about a sushi place she had found....she said it was the best she had had outside of Japan....I wanted to visit with her....she promised to hold my hand and help introduce me to sushi....I went....we had fun....it was fine! The texture was a little weird....but we ordered plenty of cooked things too, so I didn't go hungry and I got to try something new!

I got to go sightseeing on two morning! What a treat! It made me proud of our country and gave me a great opportunity to pray for our nation!

My favorite place was the Lincoln memorial! Reading the words Lincoln spoke...his humbleness and godliness....moved me to tears! and to think I almost didn't walk to it because my feet hurt! Definitely worth every step!

Giraffes in the natural history museum! I also visited the American history museum! Both were so well done...I could have spent a whole day in each.

My office mate went with me one day! It was nice to visit and have a buddy to explore with!

Wow! I wouldn't call the last month Christmas break, instead Christmas travel. It feels wonderful to be in my own home for a forth day in a row!!!! I don't plan on scheduling 3 trips in a row again...that was a little much....Chicago...Kansas....Washington DC. I have lots to share, so much so it is hard to know where to start. I think I'll talk about DC for a couple of days and then KS, but I might change my mind.

I was in DC for a huge math meeting....6000 mathematicians in one place is always fun! This year they even had a knitting circle! Here is a pic of the festivities!

I got to catch up with a conference friend (someone I see at all these math conferences but rarely at any other time) We chatted and worked on our respective crafts! She cross stitched that night!

Here is my sock. The first one is all done and the ribbing is just about done on the second. It has turned cold here, which makes me want to hurry and finish for more warmth for my feet!

The meeting was good. I caught up with lots of old friends and got to see our nation's capital for the first time! (I'll show you pics of that tomorrow) Now off for the first day of school. (where did my break go???)

Sometimes the Lord just stops me and reminds me of how much I have to be thankful for! That happened recently when DH read this. A Kansas City food critic died of an AVM. I am so thankful that God's grace protected me and my AVM was removed. May we all take time this season to be thankful....for so many things....for life....for a Savior....for His grace!

Thanks to a dear friend, I've been enjoying the amazing wisdom of Elizabeth Zimmerman. I find myself enthralled and watching these DVD's over and over again just wanting to get every little piece of advice. She is amazing and makes me want to learn to knit continental style....who would have though? So now I want to cast on for one of her EPS sweaters. Totally based off percentages and no pattern really needed....just amazing!

While watching, I've been working on these:

They are the Anniversary socks from Favorite Socks! (be sure to check the errata if you make them though) I'm enjoying the nice details of these socks and loving the little cable without a cable needle!

Here is the plain back of the socks! I'm using undyed Louet Gems yarn. I'll keep you posted on my progress!

I can't help but think of DH on the 20th of December! We went on our first date 11 years ago! (in recent years we think it might have been the 19th due to a saved movie stub, but we've celebrated on the 20th for so long....) It has been a joy getting to know and love my dear husband! I never would have thought that night, that my coworker at the library would be my husband. God is so good to me!

The last required Christmas knitting is done! (actually done before Chicago, but....)

These are modified Broad Street Mittens from knitty. I left off the mitten cover and added a few stitches to make it a little larger! I used Knit Picks Essential in Cocoa. While I'm not sure I would make these again....they were fiddly....I'm happy with the end result!

Speaking of Christmas....one of the ladies at knit night made these for all of us!

So very sweet and unexpected! and so needed....my stitch marker collection definitely needs enhancing! Here are a few more Chicago pics for good measure! Now Ashley cleverly noticed that there are no pics of LYS in Chicago....sadly I didn't make it to any....I know, I know.....we had every intention of going to one Tuesday night....directions were written out.....doable from the train.....hadn't counted on 5 inches of snow......so we stayed in.....I have plenty of stash....I know....how pathetic!

Catching up

It feels so good to be home!!! Yesterday was busy with laundry, reimbursement forms, authorization forms for the next trip, church budget and finance meeting, and enjoying time with the cat! She missed us and has since been very clingy and sweet!

Chicago:

Math: was very productive! It was awesome to see my advisor again and we got to talk quite a bit. I spent a lot of time talking with another grad student and while I've haven't proven anything else yet, I have new insights and a deeper understanding of my problem! I figure that is enough details for you all, but if you want more I can talk about this stuff forever :)

Knitting: I realized it would have to be super simple.....so a plain sock was perfect! This is using Austermann Step (has aloe in it) the yarn is quite nice. Nothing like cold Chicago to remind me that I need to knit more socks for myself! I've also realized I can knit plain socks with fun yarn....solid yarn....not so much. It was a good realization!

Sightseeing: So we ate lots of good pizza including a place where the St Valentine's Day Massacre happened! Yum! We made use of the great public transportation, so Sunday we went shopping down the Magnificent Mile....WOW!!!...it was so festive and amazing! I wasn't feeling the best this day, so I don't remember exactly what all these buildings are so you will just have to enjoy the pics without the details! (DH probably knows, but he is off working)

This one I couldn't resist! One of my favorite coffees....if only I had left room in my bag for souvenirs....why was I so practical? It was fun window shopping though and smelling the coffee fumes!

There is no doubt we got in the Christmas spirit....the cold, the snow, the lights, but now we are back to air conditioning...and excited to be going to Kansas to spend Christmas in the cold!

It is snowing! in Baton Rouge! it is sticking too! They are saying 1-2 inches. Many schools are closed, but it is finals week so I doubt the university will. I love snow! it feels like Christmas! I'll try to get a pic to post later!

Boy does it feel good to be finished with this project (and in plenty of time) Last night I hid the last thread and did a light blocking (which helped tremendously) and called it done!

I made Sherie's (from a pattern) another unknown to me knitter made Drew's. Sorry for the poor lighting in the pics! I think in person the colors are closer too.

Maybe tonight I will finish my fingerless gloves...then I would feel really good. Okay off to study...thankfully no finals to take....just giving and grading...and working on research :)

A present for Lindy!

Last week I'm mentioned that Lindy was feeling lonely and neglected. Thursday night I got to go to a knit/spin in at a new shop in town: Knitting Asylum! I had decided before I went that I could get a little fiber!

I got 3oz of lovely merino! The color was just perfect! So Friday night I got to relax with Lindy (and stayed up way too late spinning....I just had to finish and see what it looked like plied!)

A 2-ply yarn....3oz merino...260 yards....pure fun!

Stocking update: All knitting AND weaving in of ends----done! I need to block it and seam the back! Woohoo!

Today: I have a spinning date...bound to be fun!

Thank you all for your prayers and kind comments about my presentation! It went well....maybe a little shorter than I wanted, but I was pleased, very nervous, and happy it is now done! (Except for the recap with the advisor and figuring out the answers to the questions asked that I didn't know) There is still plenty to do this semester, but nothing nearly as stressful!

On the knitting front:

I'm making good progress on the stocking! I had to rip back 4 inches this weekend because I didn't like my color-work. I was carrying a lot of the colors behind the work and it was puckering and didn't look as good as the stocking I'm trying to match. So now I'm not carrying and happy with how it looks! The only bad part of the stocking (and the part I didn't anticipate) is the back:

So many ends to weave in....I spent 2 hours at knit night weaving in ends (it looked even worse then) and while I made progress, I still have a long way to go! Maybe just maybe I can finish this weekend? We will see.

On the shopping front:

I did mention DH and I went shopping on black Friday right? While most men aren't good shoppers DH is! (not always, but when he is in the mood to shop it is fun!) We were working on shopping the sales for clothing needs for both of us and working on Christmas shopping for the family. While he was checking out....I wandered over to the purses and admired this:

How could I not love it? I've been eyeing them for awhile, after all it is a giraffe print :) but never really thought I would get one. I don't spend that much on myself let alone a purse. Well DH decided, right then and there, that I should have it. No talking him out of it! I mentioned the cost, he mentioned we would be doing our part to help the economy, what can I say, there was no use arguing with him. (I reminded him Lindy was my Christmas and he said he knew that, but which one did I want, we could afford it) We did get a deal though, I insisted that we check another store who carried said purses and they were having a deal where is you traded in a used purse you got so much off your new purse. Well of course I was using a favorite purse that day, so we went and bought a cheap knock-off giraffe purse and gave them that in exchange for the discount! (All donated purses were going to charity) I love my new purse and hope whoever gets the donated one likes hers too!

I'm so glad to be back to blogging again! I've really missed it!

Quick Update

Hi all! Just wanted to update you that I am well! Had a super Thanksgiving....got to spend lots of time with DH! What a treat! I have a big presentation at school tomorrow so blogging has been on the back burner right now....so towards the end of the week you should expect a real post! Lindy is lonely...no spinning over thanksgiving....knitting, shopping, DH time, no complaints! Things will settle down soon and blogging will return to normal....I promise!

Making progress

My commissioned work is coming along nicely! The yarn used previously is discontinued and the choices available in sport weight in the needed colors were very limited. I'm hoping to get approval for the colors this week.

So far so good and it is going quickly! You knit the leg flat and then do the foot on dpn! It is nice that it doesn't get repetitive...always something new!

...so last week (yes last week) at knit night look what I got:

It really helps because we all go by different names on ravelry....okay if you're a knitter and not on ravelry go sign up today...it is awesome....www.ravelry.com! Also a Bob pin! Too cute! These were gifts from a very generous lady at knit night who also gave me a ride home so DH didn't have to come back out to get me! Knitters are good folk!

The baby bootees found there new home!

Mom...you and I are the only ones who think they look weird by the mismatchness! Oh well, they are off to their new home where I was reassured that no one would mind that they don't match. (note to self: don't use self striping yarn on bootees unless you can get them to match)

So this week I'm cheating...I scheduling posts so that I can post more....I have plenty to say....the work week is getting busy....so hopefully this works!

Moving Day

Yesterday turned into moving day.....moving offices that is. Now I'm comfortable moved in with a more normal office mate and hopeful the office will be less stressful and drama filled.

In knitting news...I've started some fingerless gloves bases on the knitty pattern Broad Street Mittens. Some modifications will definitely occur...no mitten flap and no closed thumb but that should be an easy mod. I started this weekend and was in serious denial. I kept thinking they were too small but kept knitting. Finally I stopped and faced facts!

They were a little snug on me and the recipient (who isn't here to try them on) has bigger hands than I do. So I've added stitches (hopefully not too many...although I'm a little worried about that) and am progressing!

Now that the ribbing is done they should move a little faster!

As promised....here is what Lindy and I've been up to! Here are the bobbins full of singles!

They kept multiplying....6 in all (maybe I need more bobbins...who would have thought!)

Then I plied them! Here is some of the yarn wrapped on the niddy noddy (this pics is for those who don't know what a niddy noddy is...I was right with you a few months ago...but they are handy little things)

So the 6 bobbins turned into 6 skeins of yummy yarn!

This is in the prewashed state. Now the yarn is drying all over my apartment :)

a close up! It is 70% Shetland, 30% Mohair...710 yds.....14.7 ounces of yarn! I think it turned out fairly uniform too!

Dear blog friends....I feel I owe you an explanation for my quietness this week. School/work got a little overwhelming this week so something had to suffer....so the blog was quiet. I think things are better now! I so enjoy blogging and sharing what I'm working on with you all...you encourage me, inspire me, and welcome me to your world with such open arms. But I also chose not to feel guilty if the blogging doesn't happen....so without further ado let me tell you about what I've been working on!

Old Shale Lace Triangle Shawl is done!!!

Yarn: 4 oz of handspun done on my spindle! about 350yds...color: Cocoa

Mods: I didn't end on the row they told me to, but it worked out just fine.

Made for: Mamie (DH's grandma)

The ladies at knit night think I give too much of my knitting away, but I think that is half the fun. Thinking about someone I don't see very often and making them something special so they can think about me in the year ahead. Oh well, I'll do what I want!

Let me be the first to admit that I'm completely, hopelessly addicted to spinning! It is so true!! Here are my first two skeins from Lindy!

5 oz and about 400 yards! (It looks a lot better than what I was able to do on my spindle!)

This is some of the fiber sent with the wheel that I just grabbed the first night to get going. I'll have to look again to see what is all in it! I plied it Sunday and gave it a bath. Today it was finally dry!

So last night I spun this bobbins full of singles....I told you I'm addicted! I was surprised that I'm getting faster....this took under 2 hours!

Don't worry, there is so knitting going on too! My Old Shale Shawl is almost done, but showing unblocked lace is so uninspiring, so you'll have to wait!

Since I don't really want to bore you with pics of last nights spinning....well I can't resist!

The unnamed wheel and I are getting along brilliantly! Okay enough about that....last week I agreed to my first commissioned knitting project!

I'm going to make a stocking like these. A lady on campus sent out an email looking for a knitter. Her mother made these stockings all the time (often as baby gifts) and had made them for the whole family too. Her mother has now passed and she it not a knitter. With the addition of a new daughter in law another stocking is needed! I'm trying to match the discontinued yarn Patons Look at Me baby sport weight yarn. Any suggestions? I'm going shopping this weekend to see what I can find! Have a super weekend!

....well I don't really know yet! (It is a Lendrum DT Complete for those of you who are curious) Right now there are two contenders for a name (you are welcome to add more)

Beatrix meaning bringer of joy. I like this one and could even go with Trixi for short!
Bessie (DH's choice...as in old Bessie) I looked into the meaning and this name means "consecrated to God" or "my God is abundance" I like that too and in one sense if DH is going to call her that anyway...
other suggestions? or opinions?

Now before you go giving DH a hard time realize he was the one who rearranged his schedule to be home to receive her from Fedex!

a bag lady bag! Very durable with lots of padding...you can even where it like a backpack! Not sure how many places I will be taking my wheel, but it does fold down quite easily!

Look at the pretty print on the inside....and what is inside?

Tons and tons of fiber!!! Wow! how unexpected! I heard it was coming with some fiber, but this is pounds and pounds of fiber (where will I put it all?....back in the bag for now....can't let DH think it will take up too much space!)

I quickly pulled out some fiber (couldn't even tell you what, except it was nice) and began spinning. After a little practice I got to going pretty well!

I'm definitely glad I got the doubt treadle (2 feet instead of 1) I find it much easier to get a rhythm going!

My spinning teacher/enabler N had shown me a trick she had learned when I spun at her house a few weeks back. To put a piece of velcro on your wheel to hold your yarn when you stop. I promptly added velcro to mine last night (after I realized what a pain it is without the velcro) So I guess that makes it mine!

How did that rumor start?

Yesterday in the comments it seems that someone, who will remain nameless, started a rumor about me making handspun yarn for all of you. Now trust me I wish that were possible, but I do have to finish a degree in this lifetime!!! (maybe...after the first of the year....I'll have a contest....with a prize....maybe some handspun yarn....what do you think?)

Wheel update: It is on the truck coming to my house!!! DH graciously rearranged his schedule so he could be home for most of the day to sign for it (thank you dear!) so hopefully....

Today I'm also going to participate in "Whisker's on Wednesday." KSee always has such cute pics on Wednesdays and I caught a few of Knox this week so I thought I would share!

The dots in the cable mean you purl that stitch when crossing the stitches. I had a hard time telling which ones had a dot in the original pattern. Still have questions about this pattern? Ask away!

Old Shale

First off....I voted, did you? whatever your opinion, please go vote! We are so blessed to live in a country where we have the right to voice our opinions! (The lines weren't so bad at my polling place)

With the socks finished a new project was needed! I started Evelyn Clark's Old Shale Lace Triangle Shawl (it is published in Spinoff...which one of my knitting friends gave me)

The pattern is really simple but well suited for handspun yarn and interesting enough to not be boring! Yes I'm using my second skein of handspun on the project. It looks super, but as with all lace the true transformation will come with the blocking. I'm just going to knit until I run out of yarn and then call it good! Hopefully it will be big enough.

Knox wanted to help take the picture! :) She has been so cuddly since the weather turned cooler and I'm enjoying every minute of it! Spinning wheel update: Fedex says it will be here tomorrow!!! Talk about fast. I must hurry and get all these Christmas projects finished!!! I got a good suggestion on a name for my spinning wheel yesterday and I'm definitely mulling it over.
